The most time-consuming part of moving home, apart from the actual journey, is the loading and unloading of the removal truck or van. You may be moving from a studio flat, a one bedroomed apartment of whatever and you may have just hired a man and van. The principle stays the same. The easier you make loading and unloading items from your home to the truck or van, the quicker your moving day will go.
So when you are arranging everything in your home ready to be taken away, put yourself in the position of a removal man. Think about someone arriving at your home and what you would like it to be like in order to make the carrying and loading into the van go quicker. You may think that this is doing some of the work the removal man himself should be doing but, in effect, you want your day to go quicker and if you have time yourself beforehand to make things easier for the removal men when they arrive, it will give you a quicker day which in turn can mean a less stressful day.
One way to think like this is to look around at what items are going to be difficult to load up into the van. It may be items such as in the kitchen where you have white goods or in the bedroom where you have big items such as wardrobes and large beds. One major help you can give to the removal men is taking doors off their hinges when you think items may not go through these without this being done. Obviously, care must be taken in doing this and get a friend or family member to help you if need be. Also, think about making sure there is enough space for the removal men to walk about.
You don't want any removal men tripping over boxes or anything else and in doing so, apart from damaging themselves, damaging your household belongings.
Also think about the order you would like the rooms to be emptied. The removal men themselves, should know how this is to be done and obviously this is why you should hire a reputable removal company. Yet, you may do some preparation yourself in terms of the layout of your house or apartment and that it may be easier to work from the room that is nearest the front door to those at the back. You can also make sure that all boxes are labelled correctly and, essentially, make sure any fragile items are in boxes which are labelled fragile. Although you may do this as a matter of course, double check it has been done correctly.
Make sure the removal boxes are strong and capable of holding items and that they are not overfilled.
Another aspect of helping removal men, which can make such a difference to your moving day, is making sure they have adequate parking space. This can be done by reserving a place through the local council or simply making sure your own driveway is clear of any obstructions. A professional removal company should always know what it is doing and will inform you of these things beforehand themselves. You can find however, with some less professional removal firms that they will make things like not having adequate parking or things not being prepared beforehand as excuses for being over schedule. Without doing the work for them, by taking those those extra moments to prepare things beforehand, any removal company will not be able to make excuses if anything should go wrong and apart from that you should find, in general, you have a better removal day.
