Handy Tips for Unpacking

Planned, packed and moved, and now it’s the turn of another important work i.e. unpacking. Moving house can be tedious, unless you know how to go about it in the quickest and easiest way. During the process of relocation, you are already tired by the time you reach your new house. But the boxes lying around the house will not allow you to sit in peace. You will want to make your house look less like a storeroom, but the process of unpacking needs to be strategized beforehand so that it can be quick and easy.

The two important things to remember while unpacking are: prioritization and pace. Following are a few essential tips that you should keep in mind to have a smooth unpacking session at your new place.

1. The right boxes in the right room

This is something you need to take care of during packing. While packing the boxes at your old house, make sure to label each of them with its contents and the location you want to put it into. You might want to stack them all in your living room but if you are taking the help of movers, then ask them to put the boxes in the rooms they belong to as they unload. This is especially true for furniture, so make sure you have a plan about where you want to put your furniture in the new house. Remember that moving furniture from one room to another can get extremely tough.

2. Start unpacking the frequently used items

Know that you are going to need some things as soon as you enter your new house. Given that you might not have time to unpack everything at one go, consider putting some of these items such as toilet paper, soaps, trash bags, pet food, kitchen items, clothes etc. in a separate box and unpack it first when you move into the new house.

3. Plan it out

Have an idea of where you want to put your belongings before opening up the packages. For example, before unpacking the furniture and electronics of your living room, chalk out a setting plan noting where you want to put your couch, table, TV etc. and in which room. Make sure you leave copies of the plan with the moving company so that the movers know where to put the things even if you are not present on spot to supervise. You can also put aside the boxes as you unpack them so as to avoid clutter.

You may throw them away but more often than not, removal companies are happy to take them away from you.

4. Know your pace

You must remember that it is next to impossible to try to unpack all your items and put them away all in one day. Do not try to unnecessarily strain yourself trying to do so. As mentioned earlier, sort out only the essentials on the first day. Get enough rest on the day of the move and from the next day onwards, focus on unpacking one room at a time. Give yourself a few days or even a week to complete the entire unpacking process.

5. Ask for help

If you have friends and/or family at the new locality, then ask them to give you a hand with unpacking. This will be a good way for them to welcome you to the neighbourhood and will get the work done sooner. With other people around, you can also take their suggestions and advice about how to decorate your house and utilize the space better.
