Psychologists say that moving is an exhilarating, exhausting and near traumatic event in someone’s life. If you have ever went through moving house, packing, unpacking, calling the man and van hire or the removals company and all the other small details that can make one go crazy, you know this is true.
One of the things some people forget when going through a relocation is that there are certain people (or rather said, institutions) that should definitely know that they are moving (and where).
Who should know you are moving? Read on and find out your answers.
1. Your close friends and your family. This comes without saying but your closest friends (at least) and your family should know you are moving – and they should know where you are moving too. This is especially true if you are already living far from them (for instance if you are a foreign student in the UK and if you are moving off campus).
2. Aside from people you actually know, there’s a series of institutions and service providers that should definitely know that you are moving. Some of the most important ones include your banking services providers, your credit card issuers (and store card issuers as well), your employer, your lenders, your cable providers, your telephone/Internet providers and your doctor too.
3. If you plan on moving to a country where there’s a higher risk of potentially deadly diseases, make sure your doctor will be among the first ones to know it. He/she will be able to advise you as to what kind of immunity shots you should be taking and when you should take them as well (some of these shots need to be administered very specifically at certain intervals before leaving the country).
4. Before moving, arrange with your cable, telephone and Internet providers to switch your services to the new address. Although you will most likely not have much time at your disposal in the first couple of days at your new residence, you should make sure you have all the services you need already installed by the time you are all settled in. If you are moving abroad, you may have to make these arrangements with local service providers and to close down your contracts with the current ones.
5. Keep in mind that if you have children, their schools should know about the fact that you are going to move away. About six months prior to the removal date, you should put your kids’ school paperwork in order (and this will most likely mean that you will have to get their school records out and implicitly let the school know of your moving). Also, make sure you talk to the new school principal/representative as well so that you can make sure everything is in order.
6. Your moving company. This is obvious, but keep in mind that you should start searching for the right company about a couple of months before the actual moving date. This will allow you with plenty of time to shop around, ask for quotes and find the service that fits your needs and your budget the best way. Your movers are actually among the first people to know the exact date of your moving (and the new address as well).
As mentioned before, moving can be stressful even if you are doing it just a few blocks away. Keep yourself organised, plan things ahead of time and stick to the schedule and you will make it through though. Most importantly, don’t forget to smile – it actually helps relieving stress!
