There is a lot to arrange when you are moving house. Whether it is a new rental home or your first investment you will undoubtedly have some possessions to shift. Here we supply a moving checklist to help make it go smoother.
- List everything you want to move
- Donate unwanted items
- Or sell to get some cash back
Plan early
Get together everything you want to keep. Start to collect boxes for packing. Try to keep them small and a similar size. Packing them too heavy will only make them too heavy and you will struggle to lift them. If they are a similar size they will stack up easier. Use newspaper, bubble wrap or old cloths to protect fragile things. Start to consider your options do you do it yourself or hire a professional moving company.
- Weigh up your removal options
- Get in touch for quotes
Book as early as possible
If you have a date to move then you need to book early. Even if you are doing the move yourself you will need to book a moving van. A removal company should be able to offer advice on what size will suit you or send a representative out to calculate your load. If you have a lot of possessions and are using a moving company to sort out the entire move make sure as soon as you get a date you book. But, also keep in touch of any changes. It is common for dates to change so make sure you keep the company informed.
Get packing your belongings
Buy or borrow moving boxes, and begin to pack up things you don’t use. Usually pack up out of season items first. You will need to get hold of plenty of boxes and packing supplies; it is amazing at how much you will need. It will take a while to go through each room. If you have already sorted out and cleared rubbish it might be done a little quicker. Sorting out drawers and cupboards is time consuming. When it comes to packing delicate and fragile things need protecting with bubble wrap or newspaper. Secure boxes with strong tape and label boxes clearly.
You could create a colour code for each room to represent each room. This can make it easier when it comes to unpacking.
- Store packed belongings in a spare room or garage
- Take apart larger items of furniture
As the moving date approaches
As moving day gets closer it can be a good idea to pack a suitcase with essentials such as clothes, toiletries, bedding, toilet roll, medicine etc in. This can mean you can get to work packing the remainder of your possessions. It is worth keeping some tea and coffee making essentials to hand so you can use them as you move in.
Loading with care
If you have hired help then the loading will not be a problem. If you are doing it yourself make sure you familiarise yourself with tips of lifting and moving large appliances. You will likely have some help from friends and some tools to help. Make sure you have covered some of you larger furniture items and appliances. Try to get the heavy objects near to the door to load on the van first. Don’t stack boxes to high and make sure you secure with rope or ties. You will need to drive carefully and reverse the procedure when you arrive at your new address.
