While student moving does not generally qualify as “moving house” and it does not generally need the services of a professional removal company, which does not mean it’s easy. Moving away to college (or even shifting from living on campus to living of campus) is as stressful as any removal. In fact, it can sometimes be even more of a “shock” for the students who finally move off to college and start a life of their own.
As mentioned before, you will most likely not need a man and van hire and you will most likely not need removal services. However, you should definitely be organized when packing your things to move off to college.
Here are some of the things you should absolutely keep in mind when going through this “removal” process.
1. Start early. As soon as you receive your answer from the university, start searching for a place to live in. Generally speaking, freshmen live in the rooms offered by the university on campus. However, be prepared to move off campus starting the second year of study.
2. Organize your packing. You will not have to bring too many things with you to college. However, keep in mind the fact that you will most likely spend at least a couple of months away from home so make sure you take everything you need with you.
3. Also, make sure you don’t randomly pack whatever and however you want to. In fact, make sure your packing procedure is as organized as possible because this will help you unpack faster. As you will later on see, the first day of uni (or, better said, the first day when you move off to college) will be quite hectic and the last thing you need is a mountain of boxes, bags and luggage in the middle of your dorm room.
4. Pack your clothes in an organized way too. In most of the cases, unpacking randomly packed clothes takes quite some time and it can be exhausting. Pack your warm weather clothes together and your cold weather clothes together. Organize them properly in your closet as well.
5. Don’t bring more than you need. You don’t need to carry your entire wardrobe, seven pairs of high heel shoes, 8 pairs of jeans and 3 winter coats. You don’t need a lot of other things you could easily buy on campus as well (and this includes grooming tools/products as well). Generally speaking, a week’s worth of clothing will be more than enough. Be smart and don’t allow yourself to carry 3 times more luggage just because you “might need it”.
6. Buy cooking and eating utensils. You will not become a Master Chef in college, but being able to scrap some food for yourself will come in handy when you will not be able to afford eating out. Plus, cooking your own meals (whenever that is possible) is a healthier alternative to eating out at various fast food restaurants.
7. Bring “homey” things. You may not realize it now, but you will miss your home. Pack some things to remind you of it as well. For instance, a picture of you and your high school friends and a picture of you and your family could really warm up your new dorm and it could really help you get through those “lonely” moments.
8. Bring entertainment. Yes, you will be social and yes, there will be a lot of nights out. And yes, there will be a lot of nights you will spend studying (or at least trying to). However, don’t expect every single day to be like that. Bring your laptop and bring a TV as well. If you like playing video games, bring your console. These things usually attract friends like a magnet and they also provide you with cheap entertainment on those boring Sunday evenings.
